Hi there, I am a visual artist based in Hong Kong. Welcome to my web page about my art experiments. Most of my art works were inspired by this mysterious and surrealistic city in which I found poetry. I here share them with you and wish you a good time visiting my site, enjoy!

[July/10] Asian Art Archive Summer Lab
20 high school students came to my studio to enjoy a 1 day sculpture workshop. We use Surrealistic Home as a theme and the students combine their personal story and experience into the development of their artworks. An abstract wooden sculpture was created at the end of the day by using recycled wood; it was a busy but fun art day at the studio.

[May/10] Point to Point
Project: Memory of the Forest 森林的記憶 Duration: May/4 to May/23/10 Venue: Central Star Ferry, Pier No. 8
Memory of the Forest is group of animal like sculpture made by recycled wood, created by a group of talented young students in a workshop lead by me. On every Saturday in the past two months, the students and I collected large amount of industrial wood from the garbage dumpster and transformed them into amazing sculptures which the visitors can go inside, sit down and look out towards our world from the perspective of the animals. The Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation commissioned this project. It is one of their site specific art projects entitled Point to Point, sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club.
[April/10] Best Artist Of The Year 2009 by HK Arts Develpment Council
I was awarded the Best Artist of the year of 2009 and attended the big award ceremony at the City Hall. I was happy and thanked two of my biggest fans. The first person I would like to thank is my mother, she practically attended almost every single one of my art exhibitions in the past 15 years. The second being my wife who supported my art adventure from the start of my artistic career. This dedicated this award to the two of them. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
[Feb/10] New Vision New Colours
Project: Famiglia Grande 顯赫家族 Duration: Feb/5 to April/25/10 Venue: Hong Kong Museum of Art 2/F Hours: Daily 1000 - 1800, Sat 1000 - 2000, Closed Thursday and 1st two days of Chinese New Year
I took my family out last weekend to the West Kowloon Cultural District and spent a lovely day drinking high tea and playing with the children in the outdoor. The sky is our roof and the ocean is our window. My mobile units Famiglia Grande (Grand Family) was inspired by the recent economic tsunami when the rich lost their fortune overnight, my question is how can one live on the street but still maintain a facade of looking good and in style?
The moment when my Paddling Home touched down on the Victoria Harbour and stay afloat I literally cried out, what a joy! I tailor made a boat captain suits and host a very nice boat launching party in a garden right next to the harbour and many friends came to celebrate my adventure. The weather was nice that day and I managed to not only sail out on the ocean but also did some fishing and golfing as well. In the evening when I tried to lift the boat out of the water we almost lost the roof since the current was very strong, what an adventure all in one day!
[Dec/09] 2009 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture

After months of building my Paddling Home is finally completed and now on display at the Hong Kong Shenzhen Architecture Biennale at West Kowloon Promenade. The house was well received by the public and everyone seems to like it since it resemble their homes but much smaller (only 4 feet by 4 feet). I am very proud of this little building since it has such Hong Kong look to it. I will be taking my Paddling Home to sail around the VictoriaHarbor on Jan/16/10 at 12:00pm, it will be such an adventure on that day, come join the fun if you are around. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
Opening: Oct/11 Sun 12pm-6pm Duration: Oct/11 to Dec/31/2009 Venue: Jockey Club Creative Arts Center, Unit L4-14 JCCAC, 30 Pak Tin Street, Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon Hong Kong Web: www.oc.org.hk/ _______________________________________________________________________________________________
[Sept/09] Paddling Home 漂流家室
I am building a boat house which will is going to be exhibited at the Hong Kong Shenzhen Architecture Biennale in December this year. The idea came from the extreme expansive living condition of Hong Kong where the middle class can only afford tiny apartment but have to spend their lifetime repaying the mortgage. I am creating a seemingly typical tiny apartment flat in the size of 4 feet x 4 feet, it is sitting on top of 8 blue plastic containers which work as a float like in the fish farm. Two oars will be sticking out on the sides for movement expressing the almost helpless feeling of the middle class that got stuck in the middle of the ocean. I am planning to paddle this house across the VictoriaHarbor, wish me luck.
My skyscraper just visited Hamburg and I have chosen the Chile House to represent Hamburg. This building was built during the 1920's and its roof looks like a very sharp ship's prow at one angle, a very impressive sight indeed. When I took this photograph my camera sudden went dead and was about to give up...but thank goodness my assistant Juan Juan from Hamburg came to the rescue with her own camera and was able to finish the shoot, thanks Juan Juan.
I was invited by Para/Site Art Space to participate at the Subvision Festival in HamburgGermany to exhibit my Drift City Photograph Series. It is the fist time the entire series of photographs was shown in one spot and the photos dated back since year 2000. Each artist was assigned one cargo container to play with and I transformed mine into the top part of my skyscraper turning it into a gallery space. A 3 meter tall air pumped tower was placed at the top to finish the skyscraper look. 3000 visitors came to the opening night, what a crowd. The organizer and the curator did a great job organizing the festival; please click the above photographs to see more from the photo album.
Opening: Aug 26, 2009, @ 7pm Duration: Aug/28 - Sept/6/09 Venue: Harbour City, Hamburg Germany Web: www.subvision-hamburg.de
Hong Kong people always talk about the future of West Kowloon development. In HamburgGermany there is this piece of land called HarbourCity which is even larger than our West Kowloon. I will be exhibiting my Drift City Photo Series there and each artist will get a cargo to display their artworks. My proposal is to transform the cargo container into the top part of my paper skyscraper. Inside the containers will be displaying the photos and stories from the DriftCity photo series. Maybe I will learn somthing about our West Kowloon development from the German version.
I just visited Lijiang in China with my skyscraper. Lijiang is a World Heritage Site but the OldCity area are very commercialized now and packed with local tourists. I finally found my peace in the country side. This photo is taken at the wet land park where the local call it the sea but it is actually a lake.
Venue: Wanchai Art Center 2/F Duration: now till end of Sept/2/2009
My Secret HQ is now reinstalled at the 2/F of the ArtCenter, it is located right next to the area where the public footbridge is located, with some greenery outside the window, a perfect place to have secret talks and secret meeting.
Opening: July 24, 2009, Friday @ 6pm Venue: Wanchai Art Center atrium, HK (Jazz music + drinks at the opening) Duration: till end of Oct, 2009
I just reinstalled this work which is composed by lots of children's waxed clothing. The concept is about child abuse and physical punishment most of us suffers while growing up.The torn waxed clothing will yield lemon grass smell. Childhood supposed to be sweet and nice but often some of the negative memory will be seal up and lock away in our mind. Also MP3 players on the 3/F recorded some interesting stories of physical punishment retold by mothers.
On the wall of 3/F and 4/F curse words usually used by parents to shout at their kids were pasted up. But the color are white color on white wall so it is not easy to see, but if you go there you might discover some of the familiar phases like "Rather giving life to a pock chop than giving life to you", etc. My favorite objects in the exhibition are the dust cleaner and wire cloth hanger, I wish they are seal up permanently.
[July/09] Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition Venue: Green Lawn, IFC Period: now - Dec 2009
My sculpture To Think About The Same Thing Twice is now installed at the green lawn area outside of InternationalFinancialCenter. After exhibiting it at the West Kowloon District exposed to sun and sea I decided to give it a new paint job. The sculpture is now in bright yellow colour contrasting the green grass below. I hope the sculpture will cheer up the financial Fung Shui at the IFC and bring us good market again.
Opening: July/3/09 at 6pm Venue: 5/F, Kian Dai Industrial Building, 73-75 Hung To Road, Kwun Tong, HK Period: July/4 - Aug/16/09 Web: www.osagegallery.com
After the Tin Man No.11 I created this new series of upgraded mobile living unit entitled Famiglia Grande (Grand Family). These sleeping units enable a family of 4 to live off the urban streets in luxury and in style. Each unit adopted a certain character similar to automobile industry. They are Papa Don (father with mafia background), Margarita (a hot drink), Tiepolo (an Italian paint who paint fantastic sky scene), & Angelica (an innocent angel). This group of sculptures are all hand fabricated and spray painted to the highest finishing, so much work was involved, the craftiest work I have done so far in my career.
Artist Talk: May/16/09 Kacey Wong + Jaffa Lam Location: Meet across Kapok at the Dai Pai Tong Period: May/1 - May/30/09 Web: www.soundpocket.org.hk
I was invited by the Around Sound Festival to install a new piece of sound work outside of the Kapok shop in Wanchai. My new sound sculpture is entitled MIND STIR which looks look an UFO suspended in mid air. The viewer can activate the work by turning the musical movements at the top then stand underneath it to experience the matrix of mixed tunes. The 3 musical movements were manipulated in a way where their original tunes were altered. The viewer will experience a new set of mixed musical notes starting chaotically at first then slowly quieting down into lovely enchanting tunes. _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Venue: Casa Asia, Barcelona Duration: Period: May/1 - May/30/09 Web: www.loop-barcelona.com
Two of my videos Shadow Building series (City of Tomorrow & World Wonder) were selected to be show at the Loop Festival in Barcelona. This Is Hong Kong presents a selection of artists from Hong Kong that reflect on the idea of politics, History, architecture, postcolonial issues and daily life in this territory. It presents an unique visual picture of what is Hong Kong now, through an analyses from video media, providing a fresh snapshot of development of the territory after postcolonial devolution in 1997. This selection comes from Para/site, the most cutting-edge center of that Asian city and it was curated by its director, Alvaro Rodriguez Fominaya. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
[Mar/3/09] 2009 Hong Kong International Sculpture Symposium 香港國際雕塑創作營
Duration: Mar/12 - June/15/09 Address: West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade Hours: Daily, 6am - 11pm Info: http://www.hksculpture.org/ Artwork: To Think About The Same Thing Twice
I was invited by the HK Sculpture Society to exhibit my big sculpture "To Think About The Same Thing Twice" at the West Kowloon Park. The sculpture stands next to the skyscrapers and Victoria Harbour creating a very nice juxtaposition.
I often heard people say Do not think too much! or You are thinking too much about it. Yet there is this old Chinese saying of Think thrice before you act. How many times one should think about the same issue? We often arrive at different perspectives of the same thing after thinking about it more than once. The event itself did not change; we do.
[Mar/3/09] 'Remaking Hong Kong: Architecture as Culture' 重塑香港 - 建築如文化 Response Exhibition of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition of Venice Biennale, Hong Kong Exhibition: Fabrica Cultura

Sweet smell of lemongrass filled the exhibition hall. Childhood usually being conceived as be sweet but unfortunately everyone have some dark experience they encountered during childhood and they are waxed sealed like these clothing.

Duration: Feb/21, 22, 28 & Mar/1/09 Address: Former Hollywood Road Police Quarters, 35 Aberdeen Street, Central Hours: 10am - 5pm Info: www.artist-commune.com Artwork: Towards A Brighter Future Through The Valley Of Darkness
I was invited to do an installation inside one of the room of the Former Police Dormitory. I always wanted to explore the theme of violence but I do not want to just do violence for the sake of violence only since I know violence will automatically draw attention even without content. Finally I found a theme that I like which is domestic violence which fit the site very well. I pasted insulting phrases often spoken by parents and enlarged them and turned them into stickers. The entire room was covered by these stickers, wax covered photographs of wound whipped by chicken feather duster were hung on the wall. Outside at the balcony area torn children clothing covered by lemon grass smell wax was also being shown. _______________________________________________________________________________________________

When we were children we follow our family to dinner party at the Chinese restaurant. The conversation above the table was usually boring but the space underneath the table is exciting. We hide underneath and transform the space into a playground of our own, running away from the grown ups. Now we become grown up ourselves and those who used to be above the table are disappearing one by one. This work is dedicated to those who used to play underneath the table and refuse to grow up. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
[Jan/09] Cattle 101 @artist village 牛101,牛棚牛藝術
Duration: Jan/17 to Feb/8/09 Address: Artist Commune, HK Hours: 12pm - 8pm Info: www.artist-commune.com Artwork: To Think About The Same Thing Twice
In order to celebrate the year of the Ox, I have created this piece of large scale sculpture when the viewer can walk inside. In Cantonese to drill an ox horn means being tunnel vision and could not think out of the situation. But often I found people are mentally stuck are due to not thinking things deep and broad enough, which causes the problem of tunnel visioning. This work is about 9 meter long and uses recycled wood to construct. Whenever the sun is out it cast a network of shadow onto the ground creating a beautiful play of light and shadow. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
[Jan/09] Drawing Out Conversations, Hong Kong Leg 對畫
I was invited by curator Tang Ling Nah from Singapore to participate in this exhibition which took place at my friend Michael Lee Hong Hwee studio during the Fotanian Artists Open Studios. I draw a large mural with translucent paint on the window which matches the scene outside at three different interior viewing points. I painted Godzilla flaming the buildings outside the windows, also UFO sucking up people on the roof. These are the images I drawn all the time when I was a kid. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
Tin Man No.11 is an urban sleeping unit built on top of a moving trolley. It could be an attractive sculpture when parked on the pedestrian walkway. Standing vertically it looks like a tin robot; lying down, it transforms into a comfortable home with a bed, a desk and a chair. Tin Man No. 11 symbolizes everyone can stand up with their own two feet. Keep walking, and you will find the way.
[Oct/08] Surface Tension Address: 2/F, Unit 205, Delay No Mall, 68 Yee Wo Street, CausewayBay, HK
My Self Motivation Device neon signage Work Hard, Strive for It, is now on display at the Museums of Contemporary Art China MOCA, the venue is a 7,500 sq ft white space and it is pretty cool since they even paint the floor white. The signage is my tribute to the value of the 1970 which is now long gone. It serves as a reminder to remind my self to work hard.
[Oct/08] Art @ SKMFE, Art Furniture Exhibition Duration: Until Nov/15/08 Hours: 10am - 10pm Address: Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre, 30 Pak Tin Street, Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon, HK
Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre just collected my Sitting on a Whirlpool bench and will be display at the JCCAC permanently. Also another chair of mine entitled Rabbit Chair is also on display at the 4th floor. The idea of the Rabbit Chair is based on the Lover Seat so when two person sitting together can see each others faces while having a conversation, a very romantic piece. This series is base on the idea of using recycle wood and transform them into functional art furniture.

Not satisfy with the current art space in Hong Kong, I have established SCRATCH (the Chinese name is R 爆) with my artist friend Jaffa Lam inside the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre in Shek Kip Mei. Scratch is a 300sq. ft. empty space which allow us to experiment with art production in a ‘no rules, anything goes’ manner. For our grand opening we have created a special installation with 1,000 bricks entitled Accidental Aliens. SCRATCH is an automatic installation based gallery which changes its exhibition every 3 months.

The trip to Venice was fantastic. Once arrived, I reconstructed the tricycle quickly and took it out for a ride next to the canals under beautiful Venetian blue sky, engaging the public. The Wandering Home project successfully attracted international press attention such as Designboom website and Wallpaper magazine, etc. The tricycle was collected by a private collector base in Italy and will be shown to the Italian public, I am very happy about this because I know it is in good hands and the project will be well taken care of.

My work Wandering Home and Drift City Photo Series were selected as part of the exhibiting team to represent Hong Kong to be exhibit at the Hong Kong Pavilion in Venice. I spent days packing my Wandering Home tricycle into large wooden crates and ship the whole thing to Venice. As a former student of architecture, one of the highest honors in ones career is to be able to exhibit at the Venice Architecture Biennale so I am very happy. There are many mixed emotion stirring up in my mind as I think back about my time spent in the architectural design office...I am glad I follow my heart and use fine art to investigate architecture, stay tune for more news.

I submitted an article to a new book entitled Preoccupations: Things Artists Do Anyway. Inside I wrote about my view towards my war game activities from the past 14 years. I read out my entry during the book launch to a small crowd and it was well recieved. Very interesting to hear and read about the hobbies of my fellow artist friends and to share my secret to them.

[6/29/08] Personal Skyscraper arrived at The Netherland
I have the opportunity to teach at DelftUniversity in The Netherland this summer and took the time to visit the famous Schroder House designed by Gerrit Rietveld which is one of my dream house. As I was taking the photograph there was this lady walking her dog so I decided to borrow it to take the photo to make the composition interesting. The name the dog which happen to be the same name of the dog I used to own as a child, Bobby, how strange. Special thanks to Linny Lee, Alex Visser, and Kelvin Au for helping out on the photo shoot.

Natural disaster keeping hitting Asia hard recently and people in China are suffering. I just participated in this very meaningful fund raising event by creating a donation box hoping to donate money to people who suffered from the earthquake in China. My donation box entitled Being Alive feature a broken landscape with some figurines trapped under the ruins. A boy sat at the top of the ruin all alone, although alive but all the love ones are now dead, leaving him to face the reality of being alive.

Opening:27.3.2008 (Thursday), 7:00pm Period: 27.3.2008 - 25.4.2008 Venue: Goethe-Galerie, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, 14/F Hong Kong Arts Centre, Wanchai Time: (Mon to Fri) 10am - 8pm, (Sat) 2pm - 6pm, (Sun) Closed
Someone once said 'if you only have one culture, you have no culture’. Therefore I embarked on a 97-days round the globe journey on May 2, 2006, starting from Hong Kong to London, Berlin, Prague, Munich, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Madrid, Bilbao, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Hakone and then back to Hong Kong. I wandered through 15 cities in 3 months, indulging myself in different cultures continuously. What used to be ordinary activities in the daily life now become full of stimulation, and everyday is a challenge. In the 'Drifting Thoughts' exhibition I will use the sketches I generated during this journey and realizing various sculptural ideas one by one. An overall installation based on the architecture I encountered will also be created.
[3/17/08] Hong Kong Anarchitecture Bananas, Artists who Reclaim Space 香港建築傷憐展 Period: 29.3.2008 - 17.4.2008 Venue: Artist Commune, Unit 12, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road, Kowloon, HK Hours: 12pm - 8pm, Tue - Sun, (Closed on Mon.)
After showing at the 1st HK Architecture Biennale, I was invited to show a piece of my old sculpture (Partition) at the Hong Kong Anarchitecture Bananas. As the title of the show suggested this is a naughty discourse on the official Architectural Biennale which exposed the failure of Hong Kong Architectural design instead of glorifying it. More than 30 artists participated in this exciting exhibition and the works was surprisingly good. The show was curated by my good friend Michael Wong and Lee Chun Fung as seen in the above photograph with me in the middle. They dressed in skyscraper costumes during the opening after my Personal Skyscraper project, what an honor, good job!
[1/10/08] Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism Architecture 2007 Duration: 10.1.2008 - 15.3.2008 Venue: Central Police Station Compund, 10 Hollywood Road, Hong Kong
My Wandering Homes project which is a little house sitting on top of a tricycle was selected to be feature at the 1st Hong Kong architectural Biennale. I am so glad this house I originally designed for myself which also can be seen as part of the answer for the homeless people. It was well received by the public and generated a lot of publicity. TV station such as TVB from Hong Kong BBC from UK, and MBC from Korea had covered the story of this little house. A great conclusion for a project i worked on for almost 3 years. I am planning to ride my Wandering Home around in Hong Kong checking out all the beautiful places and live in drift for a while after the exhibition.
[1/6/08] King of Kowloon's Street Calligraphy Exhibition, in memory of Tsang Tsou Choi Venue: TelfordPlaza Duration: 6/Jan/08 - 20/Jan/08
I have participated in an exhibition in the memory of one of my art idol the King of Kowloon. I made a mirror out of stainless steel in the shape of a speech bubble entitled What They Say About You. For many, the King of Kowloon is only a crazy person who wrote on the street. For others, his life long work is golden. But like all great artists the King of Kowloon maintain focus and do not give a damn about what other people say and completed his legendary life story with his own brush. This is the second piece of art work i based my idea on Mr. Tsang Tsou Choi, very inspiring indeed. ___________________________________________________________________________________________
