I Have No Enemies
This unofficial steel sculpture commemorates Chinese human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, who died in state custody under the Chinese Communist regime. Permanently anchored to a rock in a secluded, undisclosed location in Hong Kong, the work overlooks the South China Sea. It takes the form of the "empty chair" from the 2010 Nobel ceremony—a seat Mr. Liu was never permitted to fill.
On clear days, the sun projects his name, lifespan, and the poignant declaration "I Have No Enemies" onto the stone below. As the steel yields to the elements, its rusting surface serves as a meditation on transformation, mortality, and the passage of time. This solitary monument stands as a testament to a profound legacy, urging us to resist the pull of hatred while continuing the struggle for freedom and democracy.
