I met a young protester in Hong Kong who had been imprisoned for 3 years and 10 months. Before he entered, he was a slender scholar, but when he came out, he had become very muscular. I asked him how he managed to get so strong without any gym equipment in prison. He told me that he had found a book on "prisoner training" in the prison library, where he learned to use his body weight for isometric exercises that stimulate muscle growth without moving the joints. This book changed him, making him more proactive and goal-oriented. By continually reading to strengthen his mind and exercising to build his body, he may have lost his freedom physically, but his resistance movement continued in his mind and in the confines of his prison, preparing for the next approaching revolution.
